Funny Reply to Nice to Meet You: Best Witty Responses

Written by: Brendan McDonald

I’ve always believed that first impressions matter, though in my case they usually involve tripping over my own feet or fumbling a handshake. Whether it’s a networking event, a date, or just a random encounter in Iraq or North Korea, the way you respond to a simple “Nice to meet you” can set the tone for whatever comes next.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with “Nice to meet you too.” It works. So does “Likewise.” But if the conversation feels relaxed and you want a funny reply to “Nice to meet you”, you can do better than the standard script.

The trick is picking something you could plausibly say out loud without immediately wanting to leave the country.

Funny replies that actually sound natural

You don’t need an elaborate punchline. The best witty responses are usually short enough to land before everyone forgets what you were talking about.

  • “The pleasure is all yours.”
  • “I get that a lot.”
  • “We’ll see if you still feel that way in five minutes.”
  • “Nice? Let’s not jump to conclusions.”
  • “Give it a few minutes, then decide.”
  • “Ah, so you’ve heard of me?”
  • “Wow, already forming opinions? Bold move.”
  • “I was expecting a drumroll, but a handshake works.”
  • “Likewise. I’ll try not to ruin it.”
  • “Good to meet you. We’ve survived the introduction.”
  • “The feeling is currently mutual.”
  • “Great. I was worried this might be unpleasant.”

Some of these need a smile. “The pleasure is all yours” can sound playful or insufferable depending on whether the other person can tell you’re joking.

That’s part of the fun.

Flirty replies to “Nice to meet you”

Flirting is one of the few situations where a slightly overconfident answer can actually help.

Try:

  • “Nice to meet you too. You’re doing well so far.”
  • “Likewise. I was hoping you’d say that.”
  • “Nice to meet you. This is going suspiciously well.”
  • “The pleasure’s mine. So far.”
  • “Let’s see if you still think that after coffee.”
  • “Nice to meet you too. Strong opening.”

Keep it light. If the other person isn’t matching the energy, retire the material and return to being a normal human being.

Funny replies for texts and chats

A “nice to meet you” reply in a chat can feel strangely formal, especially when you’ve already spent twenty minutes messaging each other.

That makes it easier to poke fun at the whole ritual:

  • “Nice to meet you too. Very formal of us.”
  • “Likewise. We’ve now completed the mandatory greeting.”
  • “Nice to meet you too. I promise I’m less awkward in person. Probably.”
  • “Good to meet you. This chat has become official.”
  • “Same. Now what do normal people say next?”
  • “Nice to meet you too. Solid opening. No notes.”

If you actually want the conversation to continue, give them something to respond to. A joke followed by silence is still silence.

When “Nice to meet you too” is the better reply

Funny isn’t always the assignment.

If you’re meeting a client, attending a job interview, talking to someone considerably more senior than you, or simply dealing with a person who appears to have misplaced their sense of humour, keep it straightforward.

You can say:

  • “Nice to meet you too.”
  • “Likewise. It’s great to meet you.”
  • “Pleasure to meet you. I’ve been looking forward to speaking with you.”

There’s no prize for turning every introduction into a comedy set.

Once you know the person a little better, you’ll have a much better idea of whether “Nice? Let’s not jump to conclusions” will get a laugh or quietly end your professional relationship.

How to make a witty response land

Timing and tone matter more than finding the cleverest sentence on the internet.

Say something that sounds like you. If you’d never use a particular phrase in real life, meeting someone for the first time probably isn’t the moment to debut a new personality.

Read the room. Sarcasm with a new friend is different from sarcasm with someone interviewing you for a job.

Don’t explain the joke. If it needs a paragraph of supporting documentation, let it die with dignity.

Move the conversation forward. The reply should open the door to an actual conversation rather than become the conversation.

And if things are awkward anyway? That happens. We have an entire piece on how to start an awkward conversation because apparently human beings require instructions for this sort of thing.

The line I’d probably use is still one of the simplest:

“Nice? Let’s not jump to conclusions.”

It gets the job done.

If your next conversational problem is the equally automatic “How are you?”, we’ve also collected funny responses to “How are you?” and other mundane greetings.
